Hairy Crab Oolong Tea - Fall 2024
Born in the mist-veiled slopes of Anxi, Fujian, Mao Xie—known as the “Hairy Crab”—carries with it an ancient legacy. The name comes from the fine down that clings to the leaves, which, when brewed, drifts across the surface of the cup like whispers on still water. Unlike its delicate cousin Tie Guan Yin, Hairy Crab reveals a thicker body and a sweeter, more lingering taste—an oolong with both weight and grace.
Our Hairy Crab Oolong is the highest grade normally available, harvested with care to preserve its bold spirit.
The Origin Story
The tale of Hairy Crab begins in the early 1900s, in Daqiulun, Fumei Village, Anxi. According to tea lore recorded in The History of Tea Varieties (Fujian Academy of Agricultural Sciences, 1979), Zhang Jiaxie of Pingzhou Village recounted that in 1907 he encountered a tea unlike any other—vigorous, resilient, and ready for harvest within two short years of planting. He carried back a hundred young plants to his own garden, where their abundance and quality soon made them legendary. From this act, the Hairy Crab spread through Anxi, weaving itself into the lineage of oolong that endures to this day.
